Don,

Many companies are adopting social media because they think they have to - they are following a trend. They know facebook is "huge" and they need a social strategy.

More advanced organizations use social media as a tool to help with specific business problems. Some of the key drivers are:
1. Customer Engagement - building your brand and generating
leads , customer-to-customer communities
2. Listening - understanding what customers think, how they perceive your company, what problems they experience
3. Customer Support - peer-to-peer support communities (i.e. forums), real-time response (Twitter), etc.
4. Human resources - recruiting, employee communications and engagement
5. Productivity - corporate social networks that promote more efficient knowledge sharing and teamwork
6. Customer insights - customer feedback (i.e. idea management & product insights from customer interactions
