The common mistakes I see are discovering and attempting to monitor everything from the beginning. One should base the deployment of a monitoring solution on one application, one service, or one line of business. Once one decides what to monitor, then one decides what the monitoring solution needs to provide (reports, dashboard, notifications, etc). These elements become the requirements and drive the method of deployment – one service at a time.
