Hi Molly:
One of the first things to be clear on is YOUR business objectives – (A) Is this about creating a successful social customer program, or (B) Is this about making a technology call and buying some software?
What makes Lithium unique is our focus on business outcomes, particularly vibrant customer communities. We are known for a consultative approach that emphasizes the importance of community management practices and goes beyond buying software, opening it up to your customers, and praying for the best. Companies that are particularly concerned with creating successful customer communities usually choose Lithium because the company offers rich customization options for branded sites, deep connections to social web sites like Facebook and Twitter, detailed measurement features that help identify trends among social customers, and an incentive structure geared toward creating a lively customer-facing site. It’s clear (at least to us) from real-world experience that your customers and your employees have different needs.
A good recent analyst report that praises both companies while highlighting the differences in approach is the Forrester Wave for Community Platforms. Lithium has licensed the report for distribution, and you can download it here: http://pages.lithium.com/forrester-wave-community-platforms.html
I would also invite you to talk to real customers not only about the Lithium platform, but also about how their technology choices mapped to their business objectives. You are welcome to post questions to any of our community users on the Lithosphere . They’d be happy to give you frank, honest and open answers to your questions.
Best wishes on your community...
Hi Molly,
There are strengths and weakness to both platforms and the real question is about what your online community focus in? What are the main business requirements and member requirements for the community. Consider creating a detailed feature/function matrix (or simple spread sheet) where you identify the core features and rank them in priority - then analyze the software options in light of your needs.
This brief I wrote may be helpful to you. Good luck with the community!

Hi Molly,
There are several differences but it would likely be best to either talk with an account representative (just go to www.jivesoftware.com), or alternatively to connect with many people who have purchased Jive on our community - http://www.jivesoftware.com/jivespace/index.jspa.
There are many feature advantages of Jive, overall industry recognition of Jive as the leader in the space (external and internal), and high level strategic advantages that most companies find very compelling. An example on the strategic/vision side - Jive has experience with enabling and bridging both public facing communities and the employee collaboration within companies. Companies who are thinking long term about a holistic social software strategy vs. just throwing together some 'social' on their website will go with Jive 100% of the time.
