In some organizations, the CMO is similar to the CTO (Chief Technical Officer) in that they tend not to deal with the day to day "marketing" issues. Just as CTO's are looking at future technologies and evaluating core technologies for new generations of products and services, so CMO's are looking well in to the future to anticipate new markets and the appropriate products.
Usually the VP is involved with operating strategies and implementation and ensuring appropriate sales support. In some organizations, I have seen, the roles are combined. The risk here is the day to day consumes the person and "futures" don't get much time.
