What are the different tier classifications for data centers?

What do they mean? How do they determine the different tiers?

Tier classifications range from tier I - IV. A very brief overview of each tier is provided below. The Uptime Institute maintains the standards for tier classification. They have changed recently so you should visit their web site for more information ( http://www.uptimeinstitute.org ). The description below is directionally correct.

Tier I: The most basic data center that may not have UPS or generator capability.
Tier II: A bit better than a tier 1. The data center may have a UPS and a generator but may not have adequate redundancy (N + 1) to withstand the failure of any component. For example, PDU (power distribution unit) maintenance requires shutdown of systems.
Tier III: A bit better than tier II but does not possess full power, cooling or network redundancy.
Tier IV: Fault tolerant data center.
