What are the effects of an erp application on a network?
Our company is considering implementing a full ERP application. We’re still in the very early research phases, and one of the questions being tossed around is: what are the effects of an erp system on an existing network infrastructure? When you implemented your ERP system, did your company have to upgrade its network? Obviously there are a lot of variables to this equation, but in general, do you find that most networks need to be upgraded?

It depends. If you're looking at something like Oracle Financials, that can definitely have a large network impact, and you should pay close attention to what happens to the usage rates on WAN links if you have remote users. If you're looking at something like NetSuite, that probably won't have much of an impact. I'm not sure about something like SAP.
Having just completed an ERP selection engagement for a small company I can relate to your question. The answer depends somewhat on the ERP solution that is chosen. However some of the basic considerations for network/infrastructure impact would be whether the solution requires a separate application server and data base. How may users would be on the system and would there be a requirement for remote user access.
The most successful ERP implementations begin with a formal requirements definition project to ensure ERP candidate software are good matches for the business requirements.
