What are the most critical IT assets at your business and how do you manage them?

Server blades, laptops, notebooks, mobile smart phones- they are all critical to some businesses, and they've all been known to disappear, even from smart, well-run and tech-savvy companies. As I'm preparing to speak at the upcoming conference of the International Association of IT Asset Managers (IAITAM.org), I'm wondering which IT assets you and your company treat as the most critical and how you manage and keep track of those assets? And, of course, why? Thanks in advance!

Hi Michael,
Like you rightly said, the most critical IT asset is organisation-based. For my Organisation, the Database servers are the most critical IT asset to protect, manage and troubleshoot because of the critical information stored on the servers. The operation of my organisation relies majorly on old and current information and this information includes ones from Third parties and customers that should be kept confidential, integrity should be maintained and availability to the information should be provided at all times.

Hope this is helpful.

Michael,

The most critical IT asset at an organization is invariably the one which is currently down or has just been lost. :)

Seriously, though, for most organizations there is a database somewhere which is in the top 3 of critical systems. It could be the one which drives the production application, or which houses the company financials or which integrates with the organizations critical intellectual property.

The desktops/smart phones/laptops of the CEO/CFO are also usually very critical.

Most organizations in the SMB space do *not* have a formal asset tracking plan that specifically addresses critical mobile devices. Servers which are vital to an organization are often (but not always) better secured, better monitored and more redundant than other systems, but this is not always true for laptops and especially not true for smart phones.

Any small organization that has good asset management around critical mobile devices, has almost always done so because of a negative experience in the past.
