What are the names of some cost effective network switches?

We recently had a couple of switches go down, and have to replace them. We have a really tight budget, so we’re looking for something that is low-cost, yet still is a quality piece of equipment that will get us through until our budget loosens up. Any suggestions of where to begin?

If you are looking for something in the $100-200 range unmanaged switches from Netgear and Linksys will do you well. If you need some management capabilities but not all the bells and whistles of higher end switches we have been very happy with Netgear 748AT gigabit switches.

Your best option is to not compromise quality but surrender the life cycle term of your equipment. You can buy used Cisco switches with the features you need for a good price from many vendors. You will not have the long life span you would on a new equipment purchase and you will also not be able to get factory support on these, but if you are looking to save money in the short term that is the way I would go.

You can talk to Teksavers or Genesis Global as I have purchased from both of these vendors before and they have all stood by their products.

In my last job, we used Dlink switches L2&L3 for internal management and VLAN Seperation. They are good - absolutely no failure - well, in the last 7 years I have had one - which was replaced without question within 2 hours of complaint being lodged.
For the WAN it is nothing but Cisco

Dell PowerConnect switches aren't exactly feature rich but are reliable and fairly affordable.

Extreme Networks offers great portfolio of enterprise grade managed Layer 3 switches if you have to support intense applications such as voice, video, and wireless LAN.
