It depends on your budget. If you have a monthly spend above a certain point, there are high-powered services that become cost effective. I would take a look at Marin Software http://www.marinsoftware.com . The Marin app brings some serious processing power to the table and their account support teams are great.
If that is out of your budget, given the proper structure, you can go a long way on Adwords Editor + Excel. It just sucks to do it.
I would have to agree that a bulk of the work can be done within the AdWords editor but some of the more advanced options such as Ad Extensions and Day parting must still be done within the AdWords interface.

I've recently tested Marinsoftware too. They have a new product for mid-tier advertisers and are offering a free beta run till the end of the month. I've been impressed by it so far.
