I'd add that a good executive thinks strategically and understands that leading people is the key to success. In "Execution" Larry Bossidy talks about spending between 30% and 40% of his time on people leadership

A good executive doesn't just lead people but is able to get them to share his vision and mission for the company, demonstrates his integrity and ethics through his actions and treats all employees with respect and as highly competent.

It is also vital that the executive know and understand his own strengths and weaknesses as well as what he knows and what he doesn't. He then surrounds himself with those who supplement his weaknesses and add knowledge and expertise to create the most effective team possible.
