Successful ERP implementation = deep, deep, deep pockets and a zealous pursuit of the project without regard to results.
Unsuccessful ERP implementation = everyone else.
I've seen several people raise this type of question and I am stunned by the number of anonymous IT, Consultant and Software vendor responses that blame the customer. "They don't know how to run their business." "They are all idiots." And on and on.
If these applications are so wonderful why does it take an army of people, a vault of cash and the patience of Job to attempt implementation. Business moves faster than their ERP can keep pace. Customers, compliance, regulations, competitors, new products, new geographies, and economic uncertainty are the reality of business. ERP's can't handle any of this...their time in the sun has ended. These systems no longer have to constrain your company AND you don't have to pitch them out. Instead, lock them in a closet, feed them electricity, stop paying maintenance fees for upgrades you can never take and begin to invest in your companys operational agility.
