Server virtualization is a good, concrete example of a "green IT" initiative, having the potential to decrease energy, space and hardware expenditures (with the corresponding decrease in production related costs at the manufacturers' level, so a chain of green benefits, so to speak) while also providing firms with the very real benefits of increasing leverage of their IT spend. We've worked extensively in server virtualization and have seen some very impressive, quantifiable results for clients, with the added benefit of conserving their cash for other business and IT initiatives.
Reducing total computer energy use by choosing more efficient hardware, putting hardware into sleep states and automatically back on as need to meet demand, hot-cold aisle containment and more efficient power supplies tend to have the quickest returns. There are many areas to reduce energy load and wastes, including in electrical and mechanical systems, hardware and software solutions, as well as with management and reporting. Just the simple measure of monitoring and reporting energy use and allocating budgets has the greatest returns for the lowest costs and puts in place a long-term proper incentive mechanism tied to usage. Otherwise, all changes to reduce energy use get replaced or overridden in time without management aligned with the costs.
Many results from virtualization are from shutting off unneeded servers (about 30% of all servers are unused).
