Think scale. If you have one single server or blade and that's all it represents, then you know the physical boundary around your operational environment. When you realize that with a hypervisor layer sitting on top of those blades you now facilitate the potential for tens of thousands of machines, each requiring attention and each potentially being brought up to support a production use even if it has not been properly cleared through policy then you can start to imagine the possible havoc and unplanned approach to virtualization can wreak for IT operations.
