First realize that RIM needs to build an application platform strategy for the Blackberry 10 and second, convince the market that they can deliver. RIM has leveraged its enterprise platform to its advantage, but its time to move into the broader social world, and to do that they are going to have to create a developer ecosystem. But given that Apple and Android are well ahead in the market, this is going to be tough.
So in reality, despite the rhetoric that is coming out of RIM HQ, they need to find a buyer. That should be "job 1" for Heins. The fact that Balsillie and Lazaridis are remaining on the board will make it hard for RIM to move forward.
Pure, simple and easy. Go beyond the corporate ego: RIM should get out of (trying to innovate in) the handset business and focus on becoming the enterprise enabler for iPhone, Android, Windows and even existing BlackBerry phones (but nothing new invested in future device development.)
RIM is perfectly positioned to become the Switzerland of enterprise mobile systems management allowing all different phones to co-exist in the same organization and still be managed by enterprise IT. None of Apple, Google/Samsung/et.al./Microsoft can do that as they each are promoting their own devices and OSes. But BlackBerry can, and they are already on the inside in most cases.
Take a page from Lou Gerstner at IBM; stop trying to promote your own (now) commodity device and help all the other devices dance. Charge a handsome and recurring management "tax" for each individual device from the other vendors that you manage, and laugh all the way to the bank.
