Although this may not be new nor innovative, a strong source of additional clients comes from previous clients. We have a system established for keeping in touch with previous clients that continues to be a source of new and referred work.

Getting paid to speak is high on my list; although not very innovative.

I've also decided that I'm going to "know" everyone I'm Linkedin to. So I've started emailing folks to schedule a phone meeting. I started that a few weeks ago. I've met some really interesting people who I didn't know but they wanted to link to me over the years and sounded interesting. I also removed 700 people from my list and expect to remove a lot more. :) I mean how many people could I realistically stay in touch with in a year? They say the number is under 200.

This answer is related to Maria's answer -- I use social networks to look for clients. For example, I do a Twitter search of the terms "virtual assistant" "need help" etc and see whether there are people who are in need of virtual assistance services. Then I check out the profiles, web sites, and/or blogs of these people to gain more understanding of their business and needs before I contact them. It's not 100% successful all the time but I do get favorable responses.

Keep in mind, however, that for this strategy to work, you've got to have consistent presence in the social network you are using. You've got to have a strong social proof to be able to land clients through social networks.
