What are some other storage devices besides EMC?
I am researching storage devices and EMC seems like the main one, but what else is out there worth looking at? What are some main factors I should be looking at besides cost and drive technology?

3PAR, which was recently acquired by HP is quite good. EMC's main competitors are Hitachi Data Systems and NetApp. HP, IBM, and Oracle (Sun) all have high-end storage offerings as well.
Coming down from the high end a bit, Dell's EqualLogic platform, HP's Lefthand platform, and Xyratex could be considered the middle tier.
Tim,
You should have a plan as to how the storage will be installed in your environment, how it will be contacted by your other resources, what type of performance you need out of the system, and what possible growth changes you project. How it is installed and contacted will give you a list of must have protocols that must be supported by an appliance to even consider it. Determining what type of performance you need will also help you establish a baseline of performance that the appliance must exceed. Understanding your projected growth will allow you to calculate the expansion costs and develop a projected 3 year TCO that you can use to compare. Dan provided a good list of options. You should contact multiple vendors and understand the year 1 costs as well as the expansion costs and the support costs for year 2 and 3. It also helps to ask about the year 4 support costs as with many of these vendors the fourth year of support is much more expensive.
