What are some risks of not having a defined social media strategy?

I always tell my clients that they need to map out a strategy for social media before they dive in- that it can produce a bad ROI without one. What do you think are some risks of not having a defined social media strategy?

That is good advice Ted. During the exercise of mapping out, you will get to know where your target audience can be found, how they behave and what excites them. Similarly, you can glean best practices from what their peers/competition are doing. With a clearer idea of what needs to be done and what to expect, chances of success are higher.

Our advice to our clients on their social media strategy is based on our understanding of their audience and so we tell them which social media tools to use, how to interact and what are some of the metrics that can be used. You run the risk of misplaced efforts if you do not have a strategy - you could be investing efforts in areas where your audience is not present and may also be giving out the wrong kind of messages. In the meantime, a competitor could very well establish a presence.
