A page on a web site is really a "mini-site." I create specific pages for specific target markets I want to reach. I can put links to similar sites, or to additional information about the topic. Search engines look at page title, headings, and key words. Knowing the terms your target market will be searching for requires some knowledge of their market. Do some test searches for terms to see what comes up. When you find the right terms then look at how those pages are laid out. What terms, phrases, etc. make them more search engine friendly and take the best ideas to your pages.

I have been in the top two or three Google results for the search term, "types of advertising", for my article, "Six types of advertising and how to use them." The title, headings etc are all designed for people looking to explore "types of advertising."

- Find out keywords that are easy to SEO for. Use various tools (WebCEO, SEO Spyglass, etc) to figure that out.

- Apply on-page SEO tactics (Add keywords to page title, h1/h2 tags, and improve text copy with keywords, etc.)

- Try to build up back-links to your site using keywords as the anchor text. Here's a good read on how to get backlinks: http://shoutex.com/blog/backlink-seo-technique/

- Try improving your site from a technical standpoint for SEO purposes (get a faster server, setup google webmaster tool account, identify your geographic region for better targeting, etc.)

Niche markets can be targeted by focusing on very specific keyword phrases, meaning selecting keyword phrases that are longer than 2 words.

Let's say your "niche" is Baking Accessories (even though in reality this is probably a highly competitive industry). In order to tackle this industry, you need to be more specific with your keyword phrase by adding more words.

For example, you can try targeting "Steel Baking Accessories" or "Stainless Steel Baking Accessories" or even "Stainless Steel Baking Accessory Kits". Keep in mind, the more specific your keyword phrase is the more likely the traffic will be significantly lower - but who cares if this is your target market!

You can also create keyword silo pages on your website to reinforce your niche keywords. For the above example, you would create a page on your website dedicated to "Baking Accessories". Within that page you would create several inner pages dedicated to supporting keyword phrases such as "Baking Accessory Kits", "Stainless Steel Baking Accessories", and even more specific product-based keywords like "Martha Stewart Baking Accessories", "Poncho Baking Accessories", and "Mike Plata's Amazing Baking Accessories".

All in all, it establishes you as more relevant to your "Baking Accessories" niche and provides enhanced navigation to your visitors.

Search Google for the broad topic, then click on Wonder Wheel (left hand column) to reveal related searches that are more defined if you will, then click on one of the terms that most closely resembles your niche to get terms more specific to your niche. I did it with "yoga clothes" and the Wonder Wheel produced 8 more terms from which I selected "men's yoga clothes" and then a brand name.

You can do nearly the same thing with Google Adwords which gives you the bonus of seeing how many searches are done for each term along with the months they are most active and how much it would cost to use in a PPC campaign.
