I predict that HR will have to respond to new challenges regarding retention. Research shows that in a normal economy, at least 2/3rds of all employees are passively or actively looking for new opportunities. However, for 2 years those people have not seen many exciting opportunities. In comparison, the opportunities available in 2011 will appear to be exciting (This is do to the positions they have been compared to over the past 2 years). Therefore, perception of better opportunities will lead people to leave for positions that they would not have considered in 2008.
The HR team will have to determine who they want to stay and then counteract the perception that the opportunity is greater somewhere else. The latter is difficult because they are no longer dealing with a rational comparison between career options but an inflated perception of outside opportunities.
In addition to what Dave said, in order to retain the talent that you want to stay, HR will need to provide employees with flexibility to balance life and work as a top tactic to meet the challenge of attracting, retaining and rewarding the best people. This was reported in a survey conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) on the topic challenges for HR in the coming years. Some other items that this survey highlighted were:
Creating an organizational culture where trust, open communications and fairness are emphasized and demonstrated by leaders; Having jobs designed to provide employees with meaningful work that has a clear purpose in meeting organizational objectives; and,
demonstrating a commitment to employee development
