Great question! Here are my top 3 reasons why a manager should use social media:
1. Research - I frequently use my connections in social media (Twitter, Facebook, blog related) when I have a question that I can't quickly find an answer to. There have been times in the past where I've spent an hour or so researching an answer only to ask it on Twitter and have a response in minutes. Invaluable!
2. Enhance your hiring abilities - If the only tool at your disposal when hiring is hoping to find someone on CareerBuilder or Monster, then you have unnecessarily limited yourself. Word of mouth has always been among the best ways to find people (yes, even before the hallowed internet). With social media, it is possible to alert your network that you are hiring (or looking to be hired) and take advantage of THEIR connections.
3. Sanity - As much as we want to make social media in the workplace all about numbers and productivity so that we can validate its merits, we have to remember that we are still humans. Whether we are standing around the water cooler, running to Starbucks with a co-worker, or communicating on social media, our need for human interaction is a valid one that we need to be aware of even in the corporate environment. Companies that limit access to social media seem to forget that their people can just as easily turn around in their chairs and talk to each other about non-work related issues. Balancing work and our human nature is a skill we do best to have; social media is an outlet that lets people quickly connect while still working.
