I love Flipbook. It makes viewing my social media accounts (facebook, twitter, etc.) a much more visual and pleasant experience. And it's free.
I also recommend the Kindle book reader app, Evernote and TripIt.
Instapaper is a big one for me - I frequently get a few minutes in airports or coffee shops where I run across blog posts or articles that I would like to read later. Instapaper allows me to save those for later, offline viewing - it works from my PC browser, iPhone or iPad.
Most regular and valuable use comes from:
Apple Pages
Apple Numbers
Apple Keynote
Evernote
The iBook Store (I carry around a complete collection of books from Seth Godin and many others, some of which are free)
Box.Net app.
I also use the iPad to show samples of the sales enablement content we produce, along with Salesforce.com and Chatter.
Mitch Joel (of TwistImage) wrote a post about this topic. He listed his favorites and several people chimed in with theirs. You can read that post here: http://www.twistimage.com/blog/archives/the-ipad-and-the-marketing-professional/
My most used apps are:
- Twitter - to share and correspond with friends and colleagues
- Evernote - to take notes and search my "digital brain"
- Reeder - to stay up to date with news that's relevant to me
- GoodReader (Dropbox integration) - to read PDFs (white papers, ebooks, etc)
- Instapaper - to read things I saw on Twitter but didn't have time to read
- Producteev - to stay on top of my to do list
I also use:
- iA Writer - to write blog posts and long emails
- GoToMeeting - to drop in on meetings from time to time if I'm not at a computer
- WinAdmin, Remote Desktop - rarely use it, but it's huge to have when I need it.
My favorite business apps for the iPad are:
- Dragon Dictation
- Things (to do and project manager)
- iThoughts HD, Mind mapping program
- Instapaper, when on your computer browsing you can click a button in your browser that sends the article/page as is to your instapaper account. Then you can download it to your iPad and read on line. I create my own newspaper before going on planes.
Like email, I don't know what I would do without my iPad. To Apples credit it comes very close to replacing my laptop. As a Road Warrior, my best app is the ability to VPN into my network. Working virtually, I can leave my bulky laptop at the office and just carry my iPad. Keynote, Pages, and Numbers make it possible to everything. When traveling, I use Dragon to dictate my emails or for capturing notes from a lecture without pen and paper. WebEx allows me to join a meeting. I can't wait to see what's next!
Think of the iPad as a digital clipboard.
So for retail, it would be task management, real-time exception reporting, delivery of Key Performance Indicators, and some HR related things.
Again, one of these over-generalized questions. Focus, why are you called "focus" when we get so much of this?
Regardless, people actually listed some great apps, albeit some redundant ones. Here are a few more to consider:
Cloud Calendar
DropBox,
Pulse (news & blogs)
Delivery Status (by Junecloud)
1Password
Kayak
HootSuite
For our business specifically: Gusto, iMockups, Analytics HD, iSSH, Penultimate, Photogene, Web Albums (connects to Picasa).
