ICD-10 will go into effect on October 1, 2013. What are you doing within your hospital or physician practice to prepare for ICD-10?

Are you using eLearning or Live Training for your medical coders? Will you be training your physician to improve their documentation practices?

On the insurance side, we're facing some interesting challenges in this area. As you might imagine, there are many legacy systems that perform mission-critical functions and cannot be reasonably replaced or upgraded in time for this transition.

To address some of these challenges, we're deploying "crosswalk" tools with logic to translate codes from 9 to 10 and back where possible and necessary. These tools allow us to accept information from service providers at both levels and reconcile them to a single back-end system.

We also are adopting and integrating newer EDI systems to accommodate the accompanying 5010 requirements.
