Craig,

There are a number of ways to decrease inbox clutter. One way, which is hard to do if your organization is email-addicted, is to reduce the volume of interoffice email communication by using face-to-face, phone, and instant messaging for situations and applications that each is best suited for. For example, IM for multitasking while collaborating and face-to-face for unstructured, fluid interactions like group brainstorming.

As for your inbox, whenever you visit it, just do one of the following for each and every new message and you should eventually see an improvement in your productivity:

1. Act on it - Read and respond or forward/delegate
2. File it - Move it into a folder, flag it, or turn it into a task
3. Delete it - Sayonara!
