What are you using for cheap centralized storage in the 1-3 TB range?
Even small businesses are increasingly reliant upon IT to do business, and to manage and leverage business-critical information. But different solutions offer different approaches to this challenge, and different combinations of capacities, interoperability, manageability, performance and economy. I've implemented several storage solutions for small companies. Budget is the determining factor but redundancy plays a key roll across all solutions. Recently we implemented a Dell iSCSI SAN (4.5Tb) for a company with just under 100 employees. We've also implemented servers with 3 SATA 1Tb drives in a RAID 5 configuration for smaller companies. We even implemented a solution with 2 x 1Tb drives in an external dual drive box in a mirrored config.
In 2009, there are a lot more options for sub-4TB storage that there were just 2 years ago.
There are a plethora of inexpensive NAS/iSCSI appliances out there, but it is now easier than ever to build a cheap iSCSI box using 1TB or 2TB disks in a whitebox server, and using one of several free iSCSI target applications, such as: http://www.starwindsoftware.com/free
There are even more options for Linux.
