I always liked "Du mußt Amboß oder Hammer sein," (One must be either anvil or hammer.) and the double meaning that goes with it, the first of dominance (the hammer being the object that "strikes first") and the other of perservereance (the anvil eventually wearing down the hammer). Not so much that it motivates but rather that it motivates you to think about multiple possibilities or outcomes.

As life tosses it's curves, the favorites quotes list has grown. (which is why I now keep them handy on a list)

Recently, this popped out as a top favorite from Steve Jobs.

@Susan. Yes, wouldn't it be just so very wrong if we knew where our thoughtful "right" response - yet wrong act, would take our Journey. There seems to be such joyin falling down, realizing why it happened and then developing a sort of knowing how you might approach a similar situation the next time around.

I love this David. People say they are 'trying to..." and I gently remind them, there is no such activity as TRYING--you either take action or you don't. TRYING is a mental lack of commitment.

Refreshing. It reminds me of safety and traffic rules, drivers should use seat belts, not use mobile phones, read or write sms etc even when no police man is watching

I have often applied this in my professional life and have found this:

When you aim high, or set "stretch goals" then if you hit them it is spectacular. However if you aim high and even miss them you still generally do well and are successful. Setting the stretch targets helps you to succeed whether you achieve them or not so long as you strive for them.
