What are your tips for getting started in social recruiting?

Social recruiting is more than just a trend. Like every other "social" aspect of business, soon we'll drop the term "social" and the tools will simply be the norm. That said, what are your tips for an organization looking to start out with social recruiting?

I think it is important to decide what your goals are for SMR and then build a plan to meet those goals with estimated milestones. What is your target audience? What type of information will you disseminate? How will you measure the success of the program? What tools will you use (Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, other)? Perhaps the most important question is who in your organization will be responsible for posting? If there is not an individual who is in charge, you will most likely fail.

As others said, jump in but jump in with a plan.

Good luck!

Don't be timid (I used my nice word today...) about jumping into it. It's just like when you started recruiting, you have to have some rejection resilience and be willing to put the work in learning with a lot of the learning being front-loaded. Nothing for free even in the social recruiting world. You can win the game unless your in the game!

I would agree with Barry. It is important to have set goals in mind and a way to achieve and measure these goals. I would also suggest to research various social media platforms to see what may best support your goals. For pure recruiting purposes I always recommend Linkedin as a starting point.

I also advise that you stick with and either master (or fail) with one platform before trying to conquer another. Until you become highly proficient using SM for recruiting a juggling act of mixed mediums usually spells failure.

ALso it is time consuming so make sure that you have the correct person overseeing the SM recrutiting process and down the road make sure recruiting efforts are tied in with marketing, HR etc as an overall plan will benefit any company.

All good comments..... What you really need to do is participate and build your targeted audience in the community that you're looking to build relationships. These all feeds into a very traditional sourcing and relationship building strategy, nothing new just a new communication tool to assist.

Great comments, guys. Thanks!

What if an organization doesn't have a dedicated recruiter? For example, the department head is looking for talent and is using social tools. If they haven't been "in the conversations," will social still be a good option, or should they stick to traditional job boards?
