as my opinion, the followings should be considered in advance:
a.whether or not some other ones can replace you if you exit
b.the performance level during your appraisal period
c.the salary range in the market and where you stand
d.in accordance with the rule how the employee's salary increase in your company
if rational for you to increase salary, just knock at the door of your supervisor's office.
Eason makes some great points. The key to salary negotiation is to base it on facts. Facts surrounding the market, your current performance and what it would cost them to replace you. Trying to get a salary increase just because you have been there a while or "deserve" it without any backup information will probably not work.
Also, give your supervisor the heads up and time to prepare for the meeting. Just stopping by and catching them off guard with a salary increase request can serve to set a negative tone. Planning a meeting and letting them know what you would like to discuss will give them a little time to do research on their own.
It certainly is different than new hire negotiation because you have tangible performance that they have seen versus just telling them what you can do. This can be used to your advantage.
