What is the Best Way to Obtain Charity Funding?
My friend is part of a team of 3 people who are planning to open a school in Kenya for children who have lost their parents to disease. I offered to help research and find funding for this venture. What organizations will fund charities? Would registering as a non-profit make it easier for them to secure money? Where is a good place to look? Thanks.

Here are few places to go to for non-profit specific advice. You can contact your local United Way chapter, you can contact SCORE, and you can go to http://www.guidestar.org/.
Becoming a 501(c)3 non-profit expands your range of potential donors but can take a while and cost at least a little. In addition to the sources Martin Stockdale cited, I'd recommend buying lunch with or an hour of time from a local grant writer or development director, preferably with experience in similar projects. The Kenyan embassy in Washington DC and/or the consulate in New York or Las Angeles may also be helpful -- you can find contact information and more at www.kenyanembassy.com.
