What challenges do expatriate managers’ face when they return home?

Expatriates face challenges when they go for assignment in a foreign country and also face challenges when they return home particularly after staying 3 to 5 years in a foreign country. What kind of challenges do they usually face when they return home?

Like it or not, "out of sight, out of mind" applies in spades when it comes to Expatriates...and especially when it comes to their career plan. While many go on assignment with the promise of bigger and better things when they return, many organizations just aren't mature enough to really think about what that means and certainly can't commit to anything until it's way too late. If you're headed overseas, have a formal and explicit plan about what you're options are when you return. Have your leaders commit to it. And if you can't get one before you leave, start having serious conversations about it at least 12 months prior to your return. They'll say, "this can wait until you get closer to coming home." You say, "no it can't."

Thank you! Very good advice, your comment "out of sight, out of mind" says it all.

Charlie's comment is very true (having experienced this myself to some degree). There is also a risk that the returner's experiences and challenges that he or she has dealt with while overseas are simply not understood back home. This means that the person preparing for return also needs to think about how to explain these experiences in ways which have relevance to the "home" organisation.
