For me the most important characteristics beyond skill set - are the ability to take on feedback and a drive to succeed.
It's something I often test by giving a candidate an exercise to do at the first interview (presentation, training session etc.) offering feedback and then asking them to repeat the exercise at the next meeting with adjustments based on that feedback.
It's interesting to see how people take this on board, and how they actually use it in practice.
Other than that I like to build teams with strong individual characters - because I need feedback too, and I'm well aware that I can end up "dominating" a team unless they give me a push in the right direction. Those who dare to disagree at interview (particularly on the occasions where I'm deliberately contentious/wrong to see what their reactions are) are more likely to get an offer than those who don't.
It depends on the particular job. Our clients look for a job specific combination of thinking styles, job related behaviors, and occupational interests.
