What data warehousing solutions did you explore?

We are looking for a new data warehousing solution. Which vendors did you look into and why? We need the information easily accessible and current, and real time reporting would be a huge plus. What vendors would you recommend our looking into?

Based on the question, I am assuming that you do not have a data warehouse architect. The simplest and most cost effective solution would be a data warehouse / data mart appliance such as the Oracle database machine, Exadata V2. By utilizing an appliance based solution you can concentrate on the data and not the infrastructure. The appropriate infrastructure for data warehousing is crucial for success, especially if you require real time reporting.

Typically one size doesn’t fit all. A good starting point is to draft a set of criteria constrain for this decision to be made for example (these are initial assessment questions, answering can drive the discussion to a lot of places):
- What is your industry?
- Aside from “DW” & “Real Time” reporting, what are the rest of the non-functional requirements. Data size, user count, data sources etc.
- What is the UX you are planning to give to your users? (Mobile, Web, Office Productivity etc).
- What is your budget/timeline constrain?
- Do you have MDM in place?

From a bird eye view. I would recommend that you pick a BI reference model for your industry, most of them currently follow a hybrid mixture between DW/Data-Mart. Then get to know the current market offerings http://www.gartner.com/technology/media-products/reprints/aster/173535.html?u... (Gartner Magic Quadrant for BI vendors for 2010)

Build a roadmap for your DW initiative (in isolation from vendor selection). Then select your preferred vendor.

I think if you are looking for vendor (as in technology solution) advantages and related. You can call them or their local partners in their areas, line them up and ask them to take about their technologies. Once you have narrowed the selection I can augment this answer with my own experiences working with your narrowed list of vendors.
