What do you think are the most effective non-monetary perks a business can offer its employees?

Flexible work arrangements? Off-site outings? Free meals? Free time off? Commuter benefits? Wellness benefits? Other than cold hard cash, what do you think is most effective in creating a happy and productive work environment?

Flexible work arrangements are always helpful, but one of the best non-monetary incentives for me is time off. An afternoon off on a Friday afternoon does wonders for morale, and leaves me feeling more energized and ready for the week to come.

I think this very much depends on the profile and demographic of the workforce. I've seen a range of things work well in different organisations. Personally I think the best way is to offer a cafeteria style approach where there are a range of benefits and employees can choose (with a limit) the things that are really important to them. For some that may be additional holiday, for others it might be child care vouchers. But this way, you get to please as many people as possible (although to please everyone will always be impossible!!!)

Everyone likes free stuff. Specifically when my company throws me a hat, shirt, embroidered messenger bag, etc. Employees can represent their company with pride while the company gets free advertising.....brill.

That's easy, a good job fit.

Employees who have a good job fit are successful.

Employees who have a good job fit are a manager's dream.

Employees who have a good job fit become long-term employees.

Employees who have a good job fit are hard to hire away by recruiters who offer more money and perks.

I agree with Neil that different things work for different demographics. I have worked in heavily non-exempt populations where free food was the best motivator ever! If we brought in free pizza for lunch the group would be happy for days. In other populations, flexible work arrangements or extra time off was definitely the best perk. It is important to get to know your employees and determine what will work best for them.
