I think that question depends on what you mean by best.
Easiest to use?
Most cost effective?
Support for Mobile
Secure.
Scalable?
Does remote desktop = file management/transfer?
Can the service support for asynchronous as well as voice and video?
How diverse is the app support - is it just a VLC?
Most of the offerings out there support several but not all of the items i mentioned.
Each has their strength and weakness.
For my money, Logmein is the most effective right now.
Hope that helps.

I think it depends on which direction also. From outside of your network to internal machines? VPN + Terminal Services hands down. If you are looking to support remote workers, then LogMeIn is by far the best.
Microsoft Remote Desktop works fine (and is free with Microsoft PRO or business operating systems), but it's not for everyone. Why? This software simply allows remote connections from the local area network (LAN) but does not manage wide area network connectivity (WAN).
However because it is free (no monthly subscription costs which add up fast), supports file transfers, and is fast, it is very compelling to use.
I recommend that business sites always have a VPN connection setup for support so that remote access to the customer LAN is never an issue.
In my opinion most business networks should have a UTM firewall with VPN capabilities. My choice is Sonicwall, Fortinet or similar class devices. Having remote access to a network though agent software (like Zenith) on particular PCs, is a common support model, but is risky without also having VPN through an appliance.
I find LogMeIn is a great tool also. You also may want to take a look at TeamViewer.

I agree with Bob - really depends on your goals and what you are trying to accomplish. I have used LogMein and Team Viewer for remote access and found both to work well.
I've used Timbuktu for over a decade. Mac and PC, cross platform, secure. Does everything I need. Used to get great performance NYC to Boston via 56k. Not free, but worth every penny.
I've used Logmein while it can be a little slow once you get used to using it, its fairly simple to use and it's fairly cheap at around $99/year and works on pretty much any device or platform
