What do you think is the future of VoIP?

Do you think VoIP will replace traditional phone methods? Will it take over mobile communications? Where do you see VoIP evolving in the future?

Voice and computer communications in my opinion is likely to become more and more integrated, which means that VIOP is an important aspect to communications. Will it ever replace tradition telephony? I would rule that out. Mobile communications are different though as the internet connections for these devices are generally sub-standard.

Eventually, I do think VoIP will displace landline telephony, although before that happens, voice will become more integrated with the web and your PC. I've written a Focus Brief about why I think the desk phone will disappear, and I think that will come to pass. The economics of TDM are getting harder for carriers to keep supporting, and voice will eventually just be another data application on our PC or TV screen. At that point, we won't even use phone numbers - just SIP addresses.

Mobility will eventually follow suit - once carriers fully shift to 4G and LTE, all mobile communications will be on data networks and in time, there won't really be much difference between fixed and mobile services - they'll all basically work the same way, using the same technologies. Interesting scenario, huh?
