Change Management has changed.

The term used to refer primarily to the managing of technical changes (code control, migration to new releases or systems, etc.

Now Change Management can mean that... but it is also used for the larger concept of managing the introduction of any impactful change (new process, new leadership, new product release, new location, etc) into an organization. In the latter case, the psychological, sociological, emotional, as well as technical aspects of the change have to be addressed so that adoption is maximized and disruption is minimized.

So we probably should call the former... Change Control
and the latter Change Management
eh?

IT change can be a scary and risky proposition if not managed properly. Change management means managing change in an ITIL fashion and mitigating risks through expedient preparation and effective change backout plans. Change management provides the means for dissemination of knowledge required to alert users of the effected systems.

Steve, well said. Change management as you've correctly described is an often under appreciated set of activities that need to be managed or you end up introducing new tools or processes that don't get used, don't get accepted or get used incorrectly. If you want to successfully embed tools and processes into your organization, you need to make that happen. It will not happen well without executing a detailed change management plan.
