If a project is "hit by a bus", then the bus number has been reached. The bus number is the number of engineers that would be needed to be removed from a project in order for it to fail. The larger the number, the more casualties that a project can handle and still proceed.

Many factors can lead to a project getting hit by a bus. Team members can be fired, quit, promoted, on leave. It is good to understand what your bus number is. I would say that some engineers on a project could have a higher impact to the bus number, while others might not affect the number or have little impact.
