What ERP implementation methodology did your company follow?
To all of those using an ERP system, what erp implementation methodology did you follow? What strategies would you recommend for a mid-sized (200p) company about to go through an implementation?

To be successful in implementing an ERP solution you need to follow certain basics, no matter what size organization. First and foremost you will need top management commitment to the project, without this don't bother as you will fail. Assuming that you have the commitment, then you can get into the process. There are really two legs to theis, the technical leg and the business leg. The technical side needs to make sure you have all the infrastructure in place (servers, network, etc.), they need to set up accounts & security, they will need to convert data from your legacy systems (after the project team decides what data is to be converted), define disaster plans, etc. The business side needs to define the current business processes (the "As Is"), needs to determine what the new processes will be (the "To Be"), needs to set up the system adhere to the To Be processes, needs to be trained on how to execute the processes, needs to prove them out in a conference room pilot, and then go-live with the new solution. This is a simplified description, but many ERP providers can guide you through this process.

You raise two good questions.
With respect to the first, we always use our firm's "Milestone Deliverables" IT implementation methodology. We developed it in 1978 and have used it with a 100% rate success ever since. In essence, the methodology allows us to break the project down into short, manageable and measure phases. It also provides strategies to cope with the predictable "Emotional Curve" and other change management issues.
Your second question is difficult to answer in the abstract. Different circumstances call for different implementation strategies. Your internal project manager (or independent, impartial external project manager) needs to assess the alternatives and risks during the ERP implementation planning phase.
