You might want to take a look at the webistes for some of the basic ERP software packages such as Sage MAS500 and Microsoft Dynamics GP as a start. The features and functions of these packages will give you an idea what a "typical" ERP system can help you accomplish. If these packages seem to cover most of your needs, you probably want to look at more packages in the same price range / feature set as these.
If these basic packages do not cover your needs, you should begin to look at packages that are targeted more specifcially to your industry. If you are a manufacturer, look at Infor Syteline or LN, Plex Online, and maybe Microsoft Dynamics NAV. These should have more tools specific to manufacturing and will give yo ua better idea of what features seem valuable to your business.
The plan I am proposing, basically, is to start with what I would consider the lower end of the middle tier of ERP solutions, see if these seem to deliver what you need, and move up to more complex systems as needed until you feel you have found a few systems that fit your business.
If you could use some help with this, my firm helps companies find ERP software that fits their business. You can reach me with more specific questions at Jeff@BrentwoodConsulting.net
