There are a lot of variables to consider when buying a phone system. Without knowing anything about your business or needs I can't really tell you what to look for, but I can give you some simple advice. Most phone systems will do the basics just fine, as long as the people who service and install it are qualified and professional. I'd recommend you ask around and find out who are the top two or three vendors in your area and solicit quotes from them. Get a couple of different proposals to compare, but don't make your decision solely on price. The main thing is to remember that modern phone systems are more then just dial tone. There are valuable features and functionality that you can utilize to improve your business. However, don't get caught up with the bells and whistles. Use your judgment to determine if it is something you will actually be able to put into service before spending extra on an application. Lastly, make sure you examine the total cost of ownership. Some manufacturers will insist that you purchase expensive, reoccurring maintenance or support agreements. Make them show you a 3 or 5 year TCO before making a decision.

Unified messaging (voice mail and fax to e-mail), Outlook integration, Presence management, VoIP, Call recording and Auto Attendant (for after hours if you live answer).
You can get these very cheap these days. Depending on your size you may want a hosted version or a premised based solution. Hosted Solutions that offer this run about $30-$50/month per phone and INCLUDES your phone lines. If you buy a system you should be able to get this done for about $500 per phone. Keep in mind you will have to add your phone lines to the system.
