Implement a strategy: This entails deciding what you want to achieve from your online efforts, determining where your audience might be, analytics to measure what you're doing and consideration to the resources (time, personnel, budgets, etc) that you'll be using.

At least do an informal survey of customers to determine what social networks they use. It's about improving current relations first. A short questionnaire with some kind of coupon or give away to encourage participation makes the request for information easier. Then use the networks and monitor how your customers use them. Keep notes. Take some time to learn before you jump in. Learn the etiquette and behave accordingly. Build your social media strategy from an informed position.
