What green metrics help your business grow?

GREEN is a hot ... well, COOL!... buzz word these days. But there's more under the hood. Not everything called "green" is good business or even sustainable. Some green practices are more valuable and more positively impactful than others. For instance, "Energy Efficiency" provides immediate bottom line savings. "Green Chemistry" reduces liability, and can reduce costs in inventory duplication, MSDS costs, compliance reporting, etc. ... So which green metrics help your business grow ... efficiency, innovation/R&D;, export market compatibility, or something else?

In my business, using Netafim drip systems ,MP rotator nozzles, and other low flow nozzles has helped many clients save water , as well as using climate appropriate plants has kept business busy. Also using sustainable landscape practices, weather based timers ,permeable surfaces to let water remain on the property keep your plants greener.

A green attitude is the most important. Look at every business decision through a green filter: how to get the desired result with the least impact to budget, time, energy, and aggravation.

Drill down in every question. Which server is most energy efficient is the wrong question, because the answer may be not to add a server but to add a virtualized server to an existing physical server or access an application run by a hosted service who has already virtualized their app as much as possible.

Put a green checkbox into every decision and gradually your company will become more efficient completely painlessly, and you'll be green without effort.

James, I like your comment, "Put a green checkbox into every decision and gradually your company will become more efficient completely painlessly, and you'll be green without effort."

Green is an attitude about "everything". We depend on the environment for all our life support, and therefore, we can protect our habitat a little bit more with every decision. "Do no harm" also comes to mind as a green attitude and best practice.
