a blade, in this context, is a computer on a circuit card. a blade server is a chassis that holds computers these circuit cards. some blade servers hold 2, 4, 8, up to 16 or more cards. that is, in the space of one server it is possible to host up to 16 computers to be used as servers, appliances, hosts, or whatever else may be needed.

also, when an application requires multiple computers to function it is common to put them all into one blade server, making them easier to manage.
