What is a CV?
I just graduated and all of the career counselors I met with in college stressed the importance of a resume, but now I'm seeing requests for CVs. What is a CV, and why are they so important?

CV's stand for curiculum vitae
Distinctions:
1. people in the US use resume's more often. People in europe/overseas use CVs
2 .A resume is usually for someone who doesn't have a lot of experience and is younger or hasn't concentrated in one area of a field or speciality. Resumes, as you know are most common in the U.S.
3. CV's are very much like a resume, as they sum up experience, education, etc. but CV's are used more by those that have been in one field and have a speciality in that field and have concentrated on it for years. They have teachings within their experience, books they have authored, notable papers they have authored or co-authored, etc. and they have many awards or honored distinguishments.
So someone who is a CEO or a professor would have a CV, not a resume, where as someone who is 20, 30 might use a resume.
4. CV's are also used when applying for scholorships/grants commonly.
There is really no 'absolute' required for using one or another. But if you are using a resume vs a CV and you have been well established, or are older than 40 let's say, then it makes you look unknowledgeable to your peers that you don't know you should be putting your experience in a different form.
In your case, a resume would be appropriate - unless you are an adult who went back to school and you have a ton of experience in some area. Then you could use a CV if you chose.
Again, for overseas, its a CV always.
You can do a search via google to get more explaination I am sure - just type in 'cv' or 'definition of a cv'.
