What is IT Server Virtualization Management?

The term virtualization gets discussed about a lot in the world of business, but what does that term actually mean?

The term virtualization is used to refer to several technologies, but it is most popularly associated with servers and server technology. Virtualization actually means detaching, or disconnecting, the software used on that server from the hardware itself. From the server’s point of view if you look at it - means that the same hardware can be used to host a number of different servers, irrespective of the type of software each one is running.

in terms of the definition you provided, you are dead on in your assessment. Virtualization has now been re worded to cloud. These two offerings are one in the same of each other. Its scalability, provsionability, and capacity on demand if a workload needs to be provisioned in a short order of time.

Otherwise I would say your understanding of virtualization is dead on.

Steven, I wouldn't say that cloud and virtualization are synonymous, although there is some overlap for certain definitions of cloud. As it happens, we've recently had this very discussion on Focus: http://www.focus.com/questions/why-isnt-virtualization-cloud-computing/

Virtualization, as a term, tends to refer to the simulating of one thing (or the provisioning of a type of service) using a mechanism that is not identical to the thing/service provided. For server virtualization, it is the simulation of physical servers and hardware via software.

More accurately, it is the ability to take a large consolidated resource and carve it up somewhat dynamically to provide the appearance or advantage of a discrete set of the same resource type.

Similar provision wizardry -- usually by way of software -- are done with storage and network virtualization.

The simplified management of a virtualized infrastructure is what IT Server Virtualization Management is all about.
