When we discuss SEO , we think about Title and Keywords or Meta tags. Which one is more important and how they play roles in SEO ?

Concur with the above.

Page title is more important than meta tags, in fact, meta tags hold very little value in most search engines anymore.

What most folks don't know is that many search engines rely only 25% on on-page factors for SEO (think title, URL, H1/H2, etc) and 75% on off-page SEO (think inbound links: both quality & quantity). So - it's smart to do a good job on SEO and brilliant to write GREAT content that folks want to link to, while developing guest blogging relationships and sharing content so you have the chance to earn inbound links:)

Title of a page. Meta tags hold no SEO value in rankings, (except perhaps to your own site search). The Meta Description is worth considering as sometimes the engines use this in the search result, so a well crafted description may give you an edge over someone ranking just above you, much like good Paid Search copy can impact your CTR.

Title tags hold SEO value as well they also show up in the search results, so good title tags means a good chance to make a first impression in the results, as well keywords in the title's also impact relevance of your over all page and are weighted by the engines for relevancy, just don't over do the keywords, or you'll be penalized instead of rewarded.

For basic SEO I'd look at well thought out descriptive titles, and short memorable URLs that a person can make sense of to provide stronger indicators of relevancy not just to the engine but anyone reading a search results page, then look at meta descriptions last.

Title plays an important role followed by back links for the keywords used in the title from similar niche sites to improve your page rank to rank better in the search engines.

According to the SEOMoz annual surveys, title is more important than META data. That said, while the Title tag can aid in ranking for targeted terms, a well-written META description helps secure the click. No point in ranking #1 for a term for which nobody clicks on your listing as it has a less compelling description than the #2 or #3 listings.

URL, Title Tags, Descriptions, Back links and then keyword density was the top factors (in that order) that I was taught. The order may have changed slightly, but there is no reason why as a developer or as an SEO marketer that you shouldn't have Title tags and descriptions on every page. I still add in meta keywords as well, it probably doesn't do much - but I figure if I'm in there adding descriptions, I might as well do the keywords too.

I don't think I fully understand the nature of this question. Are you suggesting that you only have time to do one or the other and therefore are trying to decide which one to do?

Although I agree that Page Titles probably carry more SEO clout than meta keywords and descriptions, I don't understand why someone would not do everything possible to have their website rank more favorably in the search engines.

If you are looking to cut corners and achieve quick and easy results, then SEO might not be the right strategy for you.

exactly! I totally agree. Including descriptions and keywords with your title is a good habit to get into.

Definitely title of the page. As Candyce mentioned, having the keywords in the URL helps as well. Brent also makes a good point about writing description text. Using tags in blog posts plays a role as well because they can show up in Google alerts. You need to make sure any keywords used are based on how people search for you, not how you think people search for you.

We need to think beyond SEO to overall findability, which is about way more than writing to robots. Findability expert Heather Lutze spells it out in this interview:

Kirsten makes a good point about generating compelling content. Great content that serves the needs of people is a wonderful magnet and creates opportunities to engage with interested human beings.

If you do findability right, it will influence your content and transform your business.

Definetely the Title .....but the title as part of the tag. NOT the actual name you give the page seen on the front end of the site. Besides having SEO value ....the title tag (the one in the header of a web page) is how google indexes your site. Much like a library - you should include a very well keyworded title that accurately describes your business using the shortest amount of words.

Excellent answer Kent!

Meta title helps you rank and meta descriptions allows you to start selling before the visitor has clicked on your link.

Since this hasn't been mentioned yet, I suggest going through the Google Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide. You may search for "meta" in the guide. I've a link to it on http://www.cmouniverse.com Best, Shakti Saran

The URL is more important than links? That's really bad advice. Lots of high quality links are 90% of good search engine rankings today.

A few points here... First, title is more important than tags. Second, there's some speculation that the H1 tag is more important after the Panda update. Third, inbound links are what matters. The on page stuff can help at the margin, but it's really all about high quality inbound links which is really about creating lots of high quality content or a brand that attracts links.
