What is the best way to format a domain name?

Is it better to develop a domain name that is short, but may be spelled oddly? Or, one that is longer but has traditional (or easier) spelling?

Short and memorable worked for:
Google
AOL
Twitter
Amazon
Linkedin
Youtube
A quick check for name variations of Wikipedia tells me that short is the way to go.

I agree with Aaron's answer in regards to "brandable" domain names.
In regards to domain names being immediately picked up by search engines sometimes a less brandable domain name works. Example: LosAngelesRealEstateAgent will get results in google yet is not that cute of a name or brandable.
