A couple of things:

- SEO for your website will help people get to your site. Once they are there, you need to push them to your registration pages.

- Use coupons/discounts/prizes as a way to entice more users to your registration pages.

- Only ask for relevant information on your registration page - asking for too much info will drive users away.

- Follow up through e-mail marketing - again offering incentives to keep your customers thinking about you.

- Use Social media to connect with users at their level.

Good Luck

Giving something away in exchange for registration is the fastest way to get a good number of registrants. A white paper, e-book or email course that they will find useful are generally the best tools.

I've seen sites that offer a 10-week course where they send out one email per week for 10 weeks. For example, How to Do SEO Course, with 1 step provided each week. It's a pre-canned course so the website owner has already set it up to auto-send to the people. Sending out the emails regularly makes it easier to remind them of who you are, so it not only gets the person to register, but gives you a way to continue connecting and conversing with them.

Run a photography or video contest with the subject most relevant to your demographics. Everybody has a camera phone these days, and they can't resist showing off images of their dogs, cats, kids, grand-kids, girlfriends, boyfriends, vehicles, etc. If you have a product or service (and you must have one or the other, right?), the rules can require that whatever your company sells must somehow be in the shot.

In order to enter the contest, of course, the contestants must provide all that wonderful marketing data we marketers thrive on.

Don't think I'm right on target? Focus.com should give it a test. If I'm wrong, I'll buy everybody a widget.
