I am not affected by Hurricane Irene. However, I think we have a pretty good Backup/Recovery Plan and Disaster Recovery Plan . I have a CPA firm and we process payroll for our clients which is probably the most time sensitive work we do. We have backups that we take off-site daily and they are also backed up online, so there is redundancy. I bring my laptop home every night. If there is power at the office, I can connect remotely to the office, do work and print. If there isn't power at the office, I have the programs also on my laptop (locally) so I can to the work and print at home (if power to print). For direct deposit, I just need to find an internet connection. On our payrolls, we typically allow at least 2 days in our office for preparation, so we do have a couple of days to get it prepared.

It is important for every business to have a plan...no matter the size of the company. The thing about an emergency is that you (typically) do not know when you are going to need to act on your plan.

As far as communication, our staff is to contact their immediate supervisor in the event of a natural disaster, which is really not much different than normal operating procedures.

Good luck to everyone affected by Hurricane Irene!
