What is your opinion on disaster recovery software?
I tend to think that it's better to be proactive and have a strong backup system, but what do you think about disaster recovery software? Have you found one that works well? Is it absolutely necessary?

I have never used disater recovery software. I think a good recovery plan and quaterly tests of the plan and backup tapes is a sound solution. I only have had a couple of servers where I could not afford to have an outage for more than a few minutes and for those I did a data replication push from the production to the backup and ran the push every 15 seconds. If the production server goes down, I do a DNS switch and the backup becomes my live server and I lose at most 15 seconds worth of data. For some companies/groups that may still be too much of a loss. I guess for those few situations, a software package could be a good investment. Just make sure you run robust tests to make sure it is working before turning production over to it.
DR Software is varied in it's capabilities. These days with Visualization it tends to be the data that is the issue rather than the server, as these can be replicated quickly in an emergency or as required.
Firstly understand the importance of your data to the business, and then choose the relevant solution, be it software or simple transaction log backups or in-built file restore options.
It also depends on your Infrastructure as to whether you have the luxury of a DR site and systems or if you are relying on tools to be able to recover production systems.
I have used Symantec products in the past and it has saved me from a complete re-build and data loss, however recovery time was 6-8 hours due to the server and Apps.
The best advise is to understand the business conitnuity requirements and what they are willing to sacrifice for the cost of having a DR site with real-time data replication. Then find a happy medium and research the market for a solution.
