If you're looking for software to manage a manufacturing company, ERP is the only choice, which does not mean it's not a very good option. Most ERP systems are up to date because they cannot afford not to keep up with their customers' needs.
But if you're only selling or distributing products or providing services, ERP is not a must for you - depending on the size of your business and the industry, there are many great products that can be a very good alternative to ERP.
ERP is not out of date and it helps you greatly in maintaining your business efficiently. Industry specific ERP is a must for any manufacturing business or any related businesses.
